I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The New Year brings us to a new Golf season and an all-new Bill’s Corner.
I figured I would start the New Year off with the importance of being fit with the proper sized grip. Using my relationship with Black Widow Golf I was able get some time with Clark Rollins the Product Manager for Black Widow. I asked Clark a few questions that I thought would help with selecting the proper grip for the average golfer.
Q: How important is it to have a proper sized grip?
A: It is very important to have the proper sized grips on your clubs. While it won’t fix your swing, proper fitting allows you to focus on your game instead of your equipment.
Q: When looking for a grip; what is the first step someone should look at?
A: Honestly, people should look for what feels most comfortable, fits the best, and has the attributes that the golfer needs for their game.
Q: What are the different ways to make sure you are getting the proper size?
A: Obviously, you can go to your local golf shop, instructor, or club builder to get their professional advice. However, if you don’t have time for that you can always find various sizing charts online or in store. If you are really desperate for sizing options, you can guess based on your glove size.
Here is another way I was taught to check if the size was good. If your ring finger and middle finger just touch the palm near your thumb, grip is the right size.
Q: What’s the next after we determine the proper size grip?
A: Once you know your size, the next step is to pick the grip that meets the characteristics you need for your golf swing.
Q: What are the various types of grips available?
A: You have standard rubber grips, full cords, half cords with different formulas, designs, and features for each one.
Q: How do we know which the right type is?
A: It all depends on personal preference. I would always recommend to try and swing test as many grips as possible to find the grip that makes you most comfortable and performs to your standards.
Q: We have our proper sized grips on. How often should they be changed?
A: Depending on how often you play, most golfers can put new grips on once or twice a season.
I hope this helps piece helps some of you. I was using the wrong grips for almost a whole season when I started playing. Like everything else in golf having the right fit is always best from your clubs, golf balls and yes your Grips.
Thank you, Mr. Clark Rollins for your valuable input. If you guys are looking for some grips check out some Black Widows.

Another great interview by Bill! Thanks for sharing, I will use the chart next time I regrip. It will help me decide what I should use and the size too
Ben Sutton Golf School in Tampa Florida. I attended in Sept. This scoohl has a simulated course, so you are not just on the driving range all day like the other scoohls. You are actually practicing actual shots. I attended the 7-day scoohl. If you go request Charlie Tawse as your instructor. By far he is the best. He played on PGA tour for 10 years in the early 1970 s.
Good points all around. Truly aprpeicated.
As always, great job Bill. Very informative!
Nice piece and well odne Bill. Grips are such an oft-overlooked part of golfers equipment. This article can definitely help many golfers out there. I for one will be checking out BW Grips soon.
Very good information about how to go about choosing a grip
Changing your grips is the quickest way to improve your golf game. This is the only connection you have to your club, worn grips cause you to grip tigher. This causes more tension and robs you of distance and feel.
nice job Bill. For never taking a lesson or coaching I consider myself a decent golfer and picking a grip size messes with head all season long. This year with my next set of grips I am going to force myself to use a standard size not built up for the first time since I started. Going to make myself do it all year good or bad so I know for sure what is best for me. you will no doubt here all about it at some point…keep up the good work
