What golfers actually complain about

Read the 2026 app roundups and the same three grievances recur. Free tiers narrow with each update, so features people relied on move behind a paywall. Annual subscriptions auto-renew in the off-season and are noticed months later. And pricing is structured to be hard to compare — free tier, monthly, annual, and two or three premium levels with unclear differences.

None of those are complaints about golf. They are complaints about business models.

The pattern: build free, then tighten

The standard playbook is to grow a large free user base, then move the useful parts behind a subscription once people are committed. Front and back green yardages, "plays like" distances, stat history — all things that were free and now are not, in one app or another.

It works commercially, which is why it keeps happening. It also explains why long-time users of those apps are unusually receptive to an alternative.

What "free" means here

Go Live Golf has no paid tier. There is no premium unlock, no trial that expires, and no card on file. Scoring, Wolf, skins, Nassau, Stableford and quota, handicap tracking, live rounds, spectators and settle-up are the product, not the upsell.

Spectators do not even need an account. You send a link, they open it in a browser, they watch. That is deliberate: the person most likely to follow your round is a partner or a parent who is never going to install a golf app.

How is it free?

The honest answer is that the app is not the whole business. Go Live Golf makes money through course and pro-shop features — beverage-cart ordering and a revenue share with golf professionals — rather than by charging golfers to keep their own scores.

That alignment matters. An app funded by golfer subscriptions has an incentive to move features behind the paywall over time. One funded elsewhere does not.

What you give up

Being straight about it: there is no aerial course mapping or AR flyover here. Shot and pin distances are built in, but if you want photorealistic hole maps, the GPS-first apps do that better and charge for it accordingly.

What you get instead is the group side — live following, the betting games actually scored and settled, and real handicap tracking — without a subscription.

Switching from a paid app

There is nothing to migrate for a first round. Start a round, add your group, play. If you keep a handicap elsewhere, you can carry your index in and the app will convert it for the tees you are on.

And if you decide it is not for you, there is no subscription to remember to cancel in January.

What to check before you commit to any golf app

Ask four questions of anything you are about to install. What is free today, and has anything moved out of the free tier in the last two years? When does the subscription renew, and will you notice? Can the people who want to follow your round use it without an account? And what happens to your scoring history if you stop paying?

That last one catches people out. Several apps keep your rounds behind the subscription, so cancelling costs you the record as well as the features.

Reading the one-star reviews is more informative than reading the five-star ones. The recurring complaints tell you what the business model is.

Free is not the same as free to watch

A number of apps are free for the golfer and then require the people following along to create an account. That sounds minor and is not — it is the difference between your dad watching your round and your dad not watching your round.
