Snake Golf Game Rules
A side bet with one rule and a lot of tension. Three-putt and the snake is yours until somebody else three-putts. Whoever is holding it walking off the 18th pays everybody.
How the snake works
Nothing happens until somebody three-putts. That player has the snake. The moment anyone else three-putts, it moves to them, and it keeps moving all round.
The pot is only paid once, at the end, by whoever is unlucky enough to be holding it. Everyone else pays nothing. That is what makes the last few greens so uncomfortable.
Why it is psychologically brutal
The snake inverts normal putting pressure. Ordinarily a three-footer for par matters because of your score. With the snake in play, a three-footer to avoid a three-putt on the 18th matters because of everyone’s wallet.
It is also entirely public. Everybody watches the second putt of whoever currently holds it, and there is a good deal of commentary. That is the game.
Common variations
Escalating snake — the value doubles each time it changes hands, so a round with lots of three-putts gets expensive fast. Cap it, or somebody will be paying for the whole weekend. Snake sticks — the snake cannot move after the 16th, so late three-putts do not save you. Harsh, and it stops people deliberately conceding putts. Four-putt double — a four-putt counts as two passes, or doubles the value on the spot. No gimmes — most groups suspend gimmes entirely while playing snake, since conceding a putt to save a friend from the snake defeats the purpose.Setting the stake
Because only one person pays, the stake is per-opponent and it lands in one lump. Five dollars a head in a foursome means the holder pays fifteen. That is a reasonable level; the tension does the work, not the money.
If you use the escalating variation, agree a cap before you tee off. Doubling from five dollars survives six changes of hand and then stops being funny.
Running snake alongside your main game
Snake is a side bet, not a format. It sits on top of whatever you are actually playing — Wolf, skins, a Nassau — and settles separately at the end.
That means you need somewhere to record it. Most groups just remember, which works right up until two people remember differently on the 17th.
Keeping track
Go Live Golf records putts per hole as part of the card, so the three-putts are in the data even though snake itself is not yet a scored format. Your main game — Wolf, skins, Nassau, Stableford or quota — settles automatically.
If snake is a fixture of your group’s round, let us know. It is a short list of rules and a clear settlement, which makes it a good candidate to add.
Snake in a bigger group
With more than four players the snake becomes very unlikely to sit still, which drains the tension. Two fixes: run separate snakes per group, or switch to a value that escalates so late three-putts still hurt.
In a society day, a snake per fourball is much better than one snake across the field. Nobody can watch forty people putt.
If you do run one across a big group, someone has to own the record. This is exactly the kind of side bet that quietly dies because nobody was tracking it.
Related punishment bets
Sandy — a bonus paid to anyone who gets up and down from a bunker for par. The opposite of the snake: it pays for skill rather than punishing error. Arnies — a point for making par without ever being in the fairway, named for Arnold Palmer. Popular precisely because it rewards a scrappy hole. Barkies or woodies — hit a tree and still make par, and you collect. These stack easily on top of the snake and your main game, but the more side bets you run, the more likely one gets forgotten by the 15th.
Why three-putts are the right thing to punish
Three-putting is the one mistake in golf that is entirely self-inflicted and entirely visible. Nobody three-putts because of a bad lie or an unlucky bounce, which is what makes it fair game for a punishment bet.
It is also common enough to keep moving. A bet on double bogeys or lost balls tends to stick with one unlucky player for nine holes; three-putts spread around the group naturally.
The side effect is that everybody starts paying attention to lag putting, which is the fastest way for most amateurs to lower a score. It is a bet that accidentally improves your group.
Score the main game automatically

Frequently asked questions
What is the snake in golf?
A side bet where the first player to three-putt takes the snake. It passes on each subsequent three-putt, and whoever holds it at the end pays.
Does the snake reset each nine?
Only if you agree it does. By default it runs the full eighteen and settles once.
Can you give putts while playing snake?
Most groups suspend gimmes, since conceding a putt would let you rescue someone from the snake.
What happens if nobody three-putts?
Nobody pays. It happens more rarely than you would think.
